New Painting

I had such a great time at an electro swing party on Friday with my lady-friend that I decided to paint a picture for her. Here's a look at what I have thus far. Tomorrow I need to add her necklace and then it should be done (since I don't know what else to do to it).

Cloudy 2 Reel

I forgot that Cloudy 2 came out on dvd last week! Here's a look at the shots that I did. I was only on the show for a month, but was SUPER happy to get to animate Steve. =D

Color Comp Pt. 1

I've got one out of four color comps done. I feel like I spent too much time rendering the neck rather than trying to get the whole piece to the same level. I'll try to avoid making the same mistake again.

Ballerina Life Drawing

Hey guys,
There was a life drawing session after work today and we go to work with a ballet dancer! Every single one of her poses was fantastic! I hope we'll get more dancers as models in the future. =D

New Painting

I'm working on a new painting! There's a cool group for artists on Facebook which treats your artistic improvement like an RPG. The concept sounded fun so I decided to join. This will be for my level 1 character sheet. Here's a look at the sketch and what I have so far in the painting process.

I want to do four color comps before working on the final image. According to Chris Oatley over at the Magic Box, color comps are like practicing for your painting. You get to explore various color schemes and pick the one you like the best rather than just painting your initial idea. All four of mine will have similar lighting, as I want it to feel like the creature is in murky water, but the colors will vary on each one. Once this is done, I have plans to work on the initial stages of a new 2d test! I want to improve my 2d animation skills as well as my painting abilities as part of my participation in this group.

Life Drawing Dump!

Hey guys,
It's been a while since I scanned my drawings and now have pages from multiple sessions. The first group is from my first Dr. Sketchys Montreal. It was great! The model did a fantastic job and I loved her black swan costume.

The next two batches are from drawing sessions I had at home with my friend Fyuvix. She pointed out that I tend to draw contours of the figure rather than working from a structural stand point. So the drawings from those couple of nights are working on addressing that.

Binturong

Learning how to draw binturongs since I like to imagine my Assassins Creed character is one. XD That makes the game much more fun/interesting than accepting that I have to play as some boring human. More games should have animal characters!

Smurfs 2 Reel

Yay, the Smurfs 2 is out on dvd so I can post my work online! All of these shots are in order of appearance in the movie. The last two are from a Build-A-Bear commercial that I worked on after the majority of animation on the movie was finished.

Returning to Canada

Hey guys,
I have an announcement to make. I just signed my contract today which makes it official, in two weeks I'm heading up to Montreal to work on The Little Prince! I'm pretty excited since I have friends already working there and have heard good things about Mikros. =D Time to get packing!

Fancy Animals Revisited

I revisited this piece as part of the Magic Box masking assignment. I made some adjustments to push the contrast, lightened up his ears and added fur to the outsides. I also picked out some strands in his face. I wish I'd done more studies though to get a better grasp of the anatomy of his cheek and how it connects to his snout. I feel like that entire area is structurally ambiguous.

Magic Box Assignment

Hey guys,
I just finished the first part of the third Magic Box assignment. We were supposed to use the lasso tool to make random shapes, fill it in with black, make it a mask, and then turn the silhouette into a creature. He didn't want us to simply draw a creature since people tend to draw what they know, are familiar with, or some variation on something that can already draw well. Whereas this method would force us to come up with something new. It was really challenging to do this without drawing something first. Lol, I started over three times before settling on this shape. It was hard not to try to for the silhouette into something too early on. Part 2 will involve taking our exploration image and developing it into an actual character/creature. =D

I'm enjoying alternating between animating and painting. The question now is should I proceed to part 2 or pause to do some animation? Hmmmm...

Polishing

Hey guys,
I'm working on polishing this up and wanted to post a playblast to see if anyone has any critiques. If so, please feel free to point out whatever feels off! =D

This Evening's Update

Ok, the back is looking much better. I changed the arc on the screen left front leg (and adjusted the back in relation), so the legs on both sides are different. I'll update the screen right side tomorrow. It's definitely getting there though. I wanted to make sure this worked from various angles so I could use this cycle in the future with minimal adjustments for whatever camera angle the shot happens to be. That and making sure the cycle works from each side is teaching me a lot about dog mechanics. =D

Trot Update

Cleaning things up and working on the front/back view. There's still something about them that seems off. Hopefully I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Trot v2

I did some clean up on the legs, toned down the chest rot y, worked out the neck a bit and did some posing work from the front view. It still needs a lot of adjusting, so I didn't save any of the playblasts from that camera. If I'm able to work on this tomorrow, I'll have a front view ready to show. This exercise is really teaching me a lot about dog mechanics! =D

Trot Wip

During my unemployment I figured it would be nice to continue my animation education on my own. I love animals and thought it would be fun to do some quadruped tests. First up is a show trot of a well bred dog. According to dog show judged, the trot should appear effortless and indicates a dog that will be able to work efficiently for long periods of time. I used a basenji for reference. Here's a look at what I have so far. Everything's keyed on 1's since the trot is so fast and requires specific poses. I still have some clean up to do, but am happy with the direction this is going in. =D

I just accepted the offer and it's official, I'll be starting at Pixar at the end of the month!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited that I don't even know what else to say! =D =D =D =D

Dobermans

I'd like to try doing a somewhat realistic 2d doberman test at some point after finding out the dog rig I downloaded didn't come with jaw controls. Before I even attempted that, I felt it was necessary to do some life drawings of the dogs first.
